Also Known As: Drift Ports, Fringe Communities
Function: Rest, resupply, and refuge hubs throughout the Galactic Commons
Managed By: Varies — some by Central Directorate, others privately owned or independently governed
Waystations are massive orbital structures scattered throughout the Galactic Commons, strategically positioned along the Aetherway Travel Grid and other high-traffic drift routes. Ranging from modest refueling posts to fully developed fringe cities suspended in space, these stations offer a crucial blend of utility and respite for long-haul travelers, traders, smugglers, and the occasional vacationer seeking escape from planetary life.
Outfitted with everything needed to sustain life—atmospheric shielding, artificial gravity, nutrient recyclers, medical bays, and commercial hubs—many waystations feel less like pit stops and more like vertical metropolises. Depending on their scale and ownership, amenities can include luxurious pleasure decks, black market bazaars, diplomatic suites, or mechanic dens run by rogue engineers who don’t ask too many questions.
Some stations remain under the jurisdiction of the Central Directorate, complete with chip scan points and GCA patrols, while others operate autonomously, upheld by trade alliances, mercenary syndicates, or generations-old settlement codes. For some, waystations are home. For others, they’re the last breath of civilization before venturing into the unknown.
