Scannable neck tattoos—located just above the collarbone—are the color-coded identifiers linked directly to a person’s neural chip (ICE, ICICLE, or COLD). Applied during the coming-of-age ceremony, the pixels of these hexagonal tattoos are more than symbolic—they are essential for identity verification, financial access, and social classification.
Each tattoo’s color denotes the individual’s class:
- 🟢 Green – Civica
- 🔴 Red – Gritfolk
- ⚫ Black – Subjugate (Aekosi slaves; must undergo scarification due to regenerative properties)
- 🟡 Gold – Sovereign
The tattoos serve multiple purposes:
- Visual Verification: Sovereigns with ICE chips can scan a tattoo with nothing more than a glance, using their NeuroLink enhancements to access the person’s chip data—location, identity, medical history, credit balance, and more.
- Functional Scanning: Handheld or mounted scanners throughout the galaxy read tattoos for a variety of functions: collecting payment, confirming access, verifying identity at checkpoints, and even unlocking secured doors or transport vehicles.
- Surveillance Support: Randomized scans by government checkpoints and law enforcement ensure constant population tracking and social compliance, especially in Gritfolk and Subjugate populations.
Tattoos are considered a critical part of the control infrastructure implemented by the Central Directorate and the GCA. Without one, a person is functionally invisible—cut off from legal employment, healthcare, financial systems, and public transport.
Though the chips hold the real data, it’s the tattoos that make every citizen immediately scannable, sortable, and surveilled at a glance.
