Shardjack is a fast-paced strategy card game popular throughout the Galactic Commons. It’s known for its brutal bluffing, hidden values, and electrifying reveals.
Players compete to build the strongest hand from a mix of public and private cards, called jacks, while attempting to manipulate the core pool—a rotating bank of glowing shards that represent credits, items, or favors wagered at the center of the table. The game is equal parts psychology and probability, where a skilled bluff can win more than a perfect hand.
Core Elements:
- Shard Deck: 64 cards made of transparent nanofoil with shifting holographic symbols—suits include Flame, Flux, Steel, and Void
- Face Core: Each player receives two private jacks (“in their pocket”)
- Glowline Spread: Three central cards revealed on the table, with two more revealed in phases
- The Burn: Before the final card is flipped, players vote anonymously to “burn” one jack—removing it from the spread
- Jackstrike: A sudden-death round when two or more players go all-in and reveal their jacks one by one
Highest-ranking hand wins (based on traditional patterns like full flux, voidpair, triple flame, etc.), but reading your opponents is just as crucial. Bluffing is not just common—it’s essential.
Cultural Flavor:
- Popular in orbiting casinos, smuggler dens, and even aboard long-haul freighters
- Some Sovereigns have private, invite-only Shardjack rings where the stakes are entire starships or blackmail information
- The game is banned in certain Civica sectors due to its association with organized crime syndicates and back-alley debts
Common Slang:
- “Bleed the pot” – bluffing your way into a big win
- “Core’s hot” – the central pool is overflowing with high-stakes wagers
- “Shadowfold” – faking a weak hand until the final reveal
- “Sharded” – losing everything in a single bad hand
